Many people eagerly await the day that spring finally arrives; not on the calendar but on the thermostat.  The first warm spring day that emerges, people throw open the doors and windows. This is to air out the homes to which they have been confined through the long winter months.

The bright, sunny atmosphere fills the home, revealing the layers of dust, cobwebs and general film of winter dirt that has built up over the dark, dreary winter season.  Aghast at what they see, most homeowners resolve instantly to begin a cleanup regimen to get their house back in order.

The tradition of spring cleaning goes back many centuries; back when homes were heated strictly by burning wood and coal, and illuminated using oil lamps.  These rudimentary methods were effective in their purpose, but also caused a buildup of creosote, smoke and oily residue on walls, floors, ceilings and furniture.

Frigid temperatures prevented the hanging of washed clothes outdoors, so any washing done was hung indoors where the smoke and debris from the fuel sources embedded themselves into the fibers.  Springtime brought fresh, new opportunities however; the doors were flung open and just about everything was removed from the home to clean them thoroughly and allow the fresh spring air to cleanse and purify them.

Today’s homeowners don’t face such hardships, but we still look forward to clearing out the winter’s dust and bring in the springtime cheer.  Looking around the home at everything that needs to be done can be quite overwhelming. So try these spring cleaning tips that can help get the job organized and completed in no time.

Tip #1.

Check your calendar and choose a day for cleaning.  Mark that date on the calendar and do not waiver.

Tip #2.

Assemble everything that may be needed before beginning.  In the middle of the arduous cleaning process when you learn belatedly that you’ve run out of the best dustbuster of 2017, chances are you will postpone that project until you have the time to make a trip to the store.  Often, this task gets pushed to the back burner and may never get done.

Make a list of everything you may need such as dust busters, wood cleaners, window cleaners, cleaning cloths, sponges and vacuum cleaner bags, and then check the status of supplies that you have on hand.  You will now be ready for a trip to the department store to pick up any supplies that you lack.

Tip #3.

Clean room by room and finish one completely before moving on to the next.  Some people are roaming cleaners. They perform a few tasks in each room without ever getting one room fully finished.  Instead, choose a room and set yourself up in it; take all cleaning supplies, a large trashcan, a few large boxes marked “store”, “donate” and “other rooms”.

Tip #4.

It is always easiest to start at the top and work down.  This applies to a multi-level house as well as cleaning walls and windows.

Tip #5.

One of the most important spring cleaning tips is to make the job enjoyable because the more fun it is, the more likely you are to finish the job.  Buy fresh cut flowers to place in each completed room and play upbeat and fun music.

We all look forward to the freshness and the promise of renewal that spring brings.  Cleaning the home to embrace that fresh feeling and prepare it for the summer entertaining season is one way to celebrate the season. 1. Spring cleaning is definitely a lot of work Katina but worth it. 🙂 I think it’s easier to accumulate stuff when it’s colder because sometimes it’s hard to find your gloves or scarf and it’s easy to just buy a new one. I try to get out all our cold weather stuff right when it gets cold, that I way I know what we NEED.

  1. Thank you for this great list of tips! I especially like the idea of putting fresh cut flowers in all the rooms you finish! I personally love blasting music while I clean, otherwise it’s just too boring. Add music + flowers and it may actually be… fun?! Haha!

    1. Sometimes an end goal is exactly what we need Amanda. Motivation can be hard but beautiful flowers might just be the motivation you need to stay put. I used to be a roamer also. 😉

  2. Great tips. I need to carve out a day to do some deep spring cleaning. With my two dogs it is hard to keep up.

    1. Dog hair can definitely make it hard to keep up Gina. It gets everywhere. A day of cleaning always make my house feel immaculate. I love that feeling of accomplishment.

  3. Great tips. I swear though no matter what it will always take me an entire day to clean this house. I have 4 kids and two dogs and a husband that works a lot so when he comes home he is not likely to clean anything. It is really tough because I work full time too and cleaning in general feels so overwhelming because it can never just stay clean.

    1. Oh ya Christy, when my kids were little it was much harder. As they grew they became very helpful. We’d play games and blast music to make it fun. They also liked to race each other. I’ll take any help I can get.

  4. I love the tips given in this post, especially the one about scheduling a day to clean. I live by my planner, and if I have a day written down and know that I need to commit to cleaning that day, I’ll be less likely to just push it off.

    1. Even if for any reason you aren’t able to do the whole house in one day Gillian, finishing any rooms still makes you feel accomplished. And I’ll take what I can get. ?

  5. THis is good advice! Especially the one about having everything organised – I need to do better at locking all the cleaning products away in one spot so I know where things are when I have the time and motivation to clean haha! Because we have toddlers we put things away wherever is most secure, not always the first place you’d think to look when hunting for cleaning products!

  6. Finishing one room at a time is such a great tip. Even if I have to stop my cleaning, I can at least see the progress if I’ve been focusing on one room. Sometimes seeing the progress is what keeps me motivated!

  7. I hate cleaning, but these are great tips! I get more done when it’s all in one day, and it goes by faster when I do it all at once, instead of procrastinating which I am prone to do.
